From Canada and Australia, Morocco is a long-haul trip: there are nonstop flights to Casablanca from Montreal and Toronto, a one-stop journey of about a day from Australia, and no visa for stays under 90 days, so the planning is mostly about how many days you give it and how gently you start.
No visa for Canadian or Australian passport holders for tourist stays under 90 days at the time of writing (confirm on the official pages), nonstop flights Montreal and Toronto to Casablanca, roughly 24 to 30 hours with a stop from Australia, five to ten hours of time difference, and at least a week on the ground, ideally ten days, with a private driver-guide arranged before you fly.
Planning a Trip to Morocco From Canada and Australia: The Short Version
From Canada and Australia, Morocco is a long-haul trip, and the planning is different from a European break. Canadian and Australian passport holders do not normally need a visa for a tourist stay of up to 90 days, there are nonstop flights from Montreal and Toronto to Casablanca, and from Australia the journey is a one-stop or two-stop itinerary of roughly a day. Because you travel so far, it is worth giving the trip at least a week, and ten days if you can.
Plan for seven to ten days or more, give yourself a gentle first day to recover from the flight, and arrange your private driver and guide before you leave so that you are met at arrivals and the route matches your energy on each day. Read your government's current travel advice a few weeks before you go and again just before departure.
Passport, Visa and Official Travel Advice
- Visa. The Government of Canada lists a tourist visa as not required for stays of less than 90 days, and the Australian Government's Smartraveller advice says Australians generally do not need a visa to visit Morocco for less than 90 days. Entry rules can change at short notice, so confirm on the official pages below and with the Moroccan embassy before you travel.
- Passport validity. The Canadian advice says your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date you expect to leave Morocco, and the Australian advice notes that many countries require at least six months of validity. Airlines apply their own checks at the gate, so plan on six months and renew early if your passport is close to its limit.
- Length of stay. Ninety days is the limit for a tourist entry. If you are planning a longer trip, read the official pages before you book, because staying beyond the limit has penalties.
- Official advice. At the time of writing, both governments advise a high degree of caution in Morocco overall because of the threat of terrorism, and both advise against travel in the Western Sahara border regions near the Berm (Canada also advises against travel within 20 km of the Algerian border). Read the current advice and the regional notes for the places on your route.
For the everyday risks (scams, traffic, health), read our guide to Morocco travel safety, and arrange travel insurance that covers medical care before you leave.
Flights From Canada and Australia
From Canada
Royal Air Maroc flies nonstop between Casablanca and Montreal, and since December 2024 between Casablanca and Toronto. Published schedule times for Toronto to Casablanca are around eight hours. Routes and frequencies change by season, so check the airline's current timetable for your dates, and look at connections through Europe if you are flying from another Canadian city.
- Casablanca is the natural arrival airport from Canada. We start tours there, so you can be met in the arrivals hall and begin the route without another flight: see the private tours from Casablanca.
- Marrakech is a short domestic connection or an onward transfer from Casablanca, and it is the base for the desert and the Atlas Mountains. See the private tours from Marrakech.
- Open-jaw tickets (fly into one city and out of another) avoid backtracking on a longer route such as our 10-day itinerary.
From Australia
At the time of writing we do not know of a nonstop flight between Australia and Morocco. Most travelers connect once or twice, commonly through a Gulf hub such as Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi, or through Europe, and published one-stop journey times from Sydney and Melbourne to Casablanca or Marrakech run from roughly 24 to 30 hours depending on the layover. Check the airlines for your dates, and consider breaking the journey with a night in your connecting city if you are traveling with children or if you want to arrive rested.
Time Difference and Jet Lag
Morocco keeps one time all year (UTC+1) and moves back an hour during Ramadan. Morocco is ahead of Canada by five to six hours on the east coast and eight to nine hours on the west coast, and behind Sydney and Melbourne by nine to ten hours, depending on daylight saving on each side. That is enough to feel it.
- Make the first day light. Arrange a private airport pickup, a short ride to your riad or hotel and a gentle walk or an early dinner. We arrange the pickup around your flight times; see the private transfers.
- Do not start with the longest drive. The road from Marrakech to the Sahara is long; read Marrakech to Merzouga: distance and drive time and split it over two days.
- Build in a recovery day before or after the desert if you can, especially on the way back to a long flight home.
When to Go, From Each Hemisphere
- From Canada: spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons in Morocco. March break, summer holidays and Christmas are the busiest family periods, so drivers, desert camps and good riads fill early. See the best time to visit Morocco guide and the Christmas and New Year guide.
- From Australia: the seasons are reversed. Morocco's comfortable spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) fall in your autumn and spring, while the Australian summer holidays of December and January fall in the Moroccan winter, with cold desert nights and snow on the High Atlas. July is very hot in the south.
- Ramadan moves each year; travel is possible, with adjusted opening hours and a quieter feel.
How Many Days Is Worth the Flight
A week is the realistic minimum for the desert and the imperial cities, and ten days or more lets you see them without rushing. Add a day or two in Marrakech if you want to rest at either end.
- 7 days: imperial cities and the Sahara: the 7-day private tour from Casablanca or the 7-day private tour from Marrakech.
- 10 days: the full loop through Fes, the Sahara and Marrakech: the 10-day private tour from Casablanca, with the day-by-day plan in our 10-day itinerary guide.
- 12 days: the longer 12-day grand tour from Casablanca, for travelers who want a slower pace.
- Shorter on the ground: if you only have a few days, our 7-day itinerary guide shows what to keep and what to cut.
Money, Phone and Plugs for Canadian and Australian Visitors
Money
The currency is the Moroccan dirham, which cannot be exchanged outside Morocco, and the Canadian advice warns that it is illegal to take dirhams out of the country, so exchange only what you need. Smartraveller notes that the Australian dollar is not on the Moroccan government's list of approved exchange currencies, so you will not be able to exchange Australian dollars in cash in Morocco: plan to withdraw dirhams from bank ATMs with your card. Cards work in most hotels and larger shops, but small cafes, taxis and market stalls expect cash. Check your card's overseas fees and tell your bank your travel dates. See our first-time travel tips for tipping and bargaining.
Phone
Roaming rates depend on your Canadian or Australian plan, so check before you go, or buy a local SIM or eSIM on arrival. WhatsApp is widely used in Morocco, including by drivers and guides.
Plugs
Morocco uses plug types C and E at 220 V. Canadian and Australian plugs differ from both, so bring an adapter. Check that your chargers accept 220 V (most modern phone and laptop chargers do) before you plug in a hair dryer or other single-voltage device.
Booking a Private Tour From Canada or Australia
Many long-haul travelers book a private driver-guide before flying, so that the first and last day run on their own timetable and every stop suits the group. All our tours are private, with a professional driver-guide, and we are available 24 hours a day on WhatsApp, with a reply target of two hours, whatever your time zone. If you are unsure whether to go private, read private tour, group tour or self-drive in Morocco. Then send your arrival airport, dates and group size through the contact form, browse the private Morocco tours, or ask for a tailor-made route. Traveling from the US instead?
